Development Manager, African Parks Incubator Programme
Location: Johannesburg, Head Office

Overview:
African Parks is a non-profit conservation organisation that takes on the complete responsibility for the rehabilitation and long-term management of national parks in partnership with governments and local communities. We currently manage 17 national parks and protected areas in 11 countries across Africa covering 13 million hectares: Angola, Benin, Central African Republic, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, the Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Zimbabwe and Zambia.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the identification of suitable organisations with whom African Parks can partner as part of its Incubator Programme (Replication Model), with the aim of scaling APs conservation impact.
- Responsible for the assessment/due diligence and onboarding of the identified organisation as well as the ongoing management of the partnerships.
- Provide technical/operational expertise and mentoring to the partner organisation and their project(s), ensuring a transfer and infusion of the APN DNA with the objective of helping the partner to grow and develop their own capacity to effectively implement APNs model.
- Assist and coordinate were needed relevant Governmental and institutional relationships.
- Represent African Parks on the partner organisation’s Board.
- Oversight of the project implementation to contribute towards the achievement of the goals defined in their Business Plans, in line with the agreed budget, and to conduct at least bi-annual site visits to ensure that operations are being conducted in compliance with APNs SOPs.
- Being the linking pin between the central African Parks head office with respect to the utilization of centrally available expertise (functional operational, conservation, finance and HR) and the support requirements of partner organisation and project(s).
- Developing a pipeline of prospective new partnerships (or facilitating new projects within existing partnerships), which should be aligned with the African Parks growth Strategy (to be defined in 2020) in terms of biomes, regions etc.
- Coordinate, where required, with central functional support roles at head office in relation to the respective partnerships (e.g. Media/Communications and Fundraising).
Required Qualifications, Competencies and Experience:
- 15 years’ experience in wildlife management / conservation across Africa
- 5 years senior management experience in a similar role(s)
- Relevant post graduate qualification – additional business qualification will be an advantage
- Recognized thought leader/mentor in the conservation field
- Excellent communication (verbal and in writing) and presentation skills
- Team player with a strong interpersonal and relationship management, ideally including African government relations
- Deadline and quality focused
- French language skills are an advantage
