Policy Coordinator
Reports to: Policy Manager
Job purpose:
To coordinate efficiently and professionally the policy activities of the IFOAM Organics Europe Group in the agriculture, food and environmental fields, with a focus on pesticide legislations, non-toxic environment, natural inputs, fertilisers, nutrient management, and other inputs such as feed additives or veterinary medicinal products, and other topics designated by the Policy Manager, in collaboration with the policy unit team.
Key tasks:
- Pesticides and natural inputs (70%): Advocate for developments within agricultural and environmental legislation
- Research, identify and analyse relevant legislative developments in the agriculture, food and environmental policy fields, with a focus on pesticides, natural inputs, non-toxic environment, nutrient management, etc.
- Draft IFOAM Organics Europe position papers and advocacy material, as well as press releases and articles for both external and internal communication
- Coordinate IFOAM Organics Europe internal expert group on plant protection products and fertilisers, analyse feedback from IFOAM Organics Europe members and integrate results of internal consultations into positions
- Effectively communicate policy activities and political developments to IFOAM Organics Europe internal structures and members
- Advocate for relevant policy changes towards EU institutions
- Liaise with researchers to develop studies to support the advocacy work
- Coordinate input and participate to DG SANTE expert group meetings on pesticides
- Coordinate input and participate to EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) stakeholders’ meetings
- Coordinate and implement a new IFOAM Organics Europe project on pesticides residues
- Contribute to the coordination and implementation of IFOAM Organics Europe projects (30%)
- Coordinate and implement the RELACS project activities related to science-practice-policy dialogue and development of policy recommendations. Reporting to Research & Innovation Manager and Policy Manager.
- Liaise with relevant project partners
- Organise meetings and workshops and produce minutes and reports with the projects results when needed
RELACS: Replacement of Contentious Inputs in Organic Farming Systems' (RELACS) fosters the development and facilitates the adoption of cost-efficient and environmentally safe tools and technologies, to phase out the dependency on and use of inputs considered contentious in organic farming systems. What kind of person are we looking for?
Education & Qualifications
- Master’s degree in (organic) agriculture, agronomy, bioengineering, biology or related studies
Experience and knowledge - Essential
- First experience in an NGO, farm advisory service, research institute or public authority (minimum 2-3 years) and relevant work or research experience
- Knowledge in pesticides, chemistry, or biology
- Knowledge of organic farming
- Effective communication skills in English including verbal and written skills
- Proven ability to research and understand complex technical topics related to environmental and agriculture policies, especially pesticides and nutrient management
Experience and knowledge - Desirable
- Knowledge of other EU languages is an asset
- Knowledge of EU institutions and of the EU legislative process
- Knowledge of EU agricultural, food and environmental policies
- Knowledge of EU institutions and of the EU legislative process
- Experience of MS Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint

Conditions of employment
- Full time position
- Only EU citizens or with a valid Belgian working permit if relevant
- Based at the IFOAM Organics Europe office in Brussels
- Monday to Friday, 38 hours/week
